Link a date

Privacy

Last updated:

Link a date is for moving from a chat to a real date without sharing your phone number. It has no accounts, no ads and no trackers, and it sets no cookies. It does keep anonymous totals of how often the site is used, as described under "Counts of use" below.

What is stored

Only what the people on a date type: the title, the day and time, the time zone, the place, a link to the place, a note, the chat messages, each person's quick "On the day" update and each person's "how to spot me" note. The two private links are not stored. Only a scrambled fingerprint of each is kept, so nobody can open a date through the site without its link. The passphrase of a date is kept the same way: only a salted, scrambled fingerprint, never the passphrase itself. Wrong passphrase tries are kept for up to one hour, tied to a scrambled mix of the visitor's network address and the date, only to slow down guessing. A passphrase is a lock against casual access, not a strong secret, so choose one that is not easy to guess.

The details, and the messages in a chat, are stored as plain text in the site's database, and only the site owners have access to that database. While a date page is open, the page keeps a live connection to the site only so that it can tell the other person's page that something changed. The connection carries no messages or details, and the site stores nothing from it. The calendar file is made when you ask for it and is not stored.

Adults only

Link a date is for people aged 18 or older. It asks you to confirm this with a checkbox. It does not ask for or keep your age, name or any proof.

Rooms

A room stores its name and description, and, if the admin chose a passphrase, only a salted, scrambled fingerprint of it, kept and checked the same way as for a date. A post stores the nickname, the text, the general area and the optional day and time that its author typed. A request to join is a normal date, with the same data as any other date. A post expires at its time, or after 3 days if it has no time. An expired post is hidden from the board, and it is deleted once it has no requests left, because the poster opens the requests through the post. A room with no posts is deleted after 30 days, and a room with no activity at all is deleted after 180 days. The admin can delete a room, and the poster can delete a post, at any time. Deleting a room or a post also deletes the dates, chats and updates that belong to it. Rooms are not listed anywhere, and search engines are asked to ignore them.

Who can see a date

Anyone who has the link and, for a date with a passphrase, the passphrase. Share them only with the person you invite, and tell the passphrase by another route than the link.

How long it is kept

A date is deleted automatically 30 days after it took place. The person who made it can delete it at any time from their own link, and the person who was invited can delete it at any time with "Block and delete". Deleting a date also deletes its chat and its updates.

Limits on use

To stop abuse, the site limits how fast one visitor can create dates and send messages. For this it counts requests per network address for the current minute only (an IPv6 address is counted by its first 64 bits, the block that one connection owns). The count is not saved and is not tied to anything you wrote. For making rooms, posting and asking to join, it counts per network address over the past hour. That count is kept as a scrambled value, not the address itself, and every entry is deleted after an hour. Wrong passphrase tries are counted in the same way, per date or room and per visitor, and make a visitor wait before trying again. Many wrong tries from all visitors together lock that date or room for up to an hour.

Counts of use

The site keeps simple daily totals, for example how many times the home page was opened, how many dates were made, answered or deleted, how many chat messages were sent and how many rooms were made. Page opens by robots are not counted, and the same person opening the same page again within 10 seconds counts once. These totals contain no addresses, no links, no passphrases and no text that anyone wrote, and nothing in them is tied to a visitor. They are kept for 180 days and are seen only by the site owner, on a private page.

In your browser

The site saves a few small things in your own browser, not in a cookie: your choice of Theme, whether to read new chat messages aloud, and, for a date or room that has a passphrase, a proof that you entered it, which is kept for that browser tab only and is sent back to the site with your requests so that it opens for you. Closing the tab forgets the proof. Clearing the site's data in your browser removes the rest.

Hosting

The site runs on Cloudflare. Cloudflare delivers the pages and handles the connection, so it sees your network address and what you request, under its own privacy policy, and it blocks floods of requests before they reach the site. The site itself does not store your address, apart from the scrambled, short-lived limits above.

If you write to us

If you report something by email, we receive your email address and your message. We use them only to look into the report and to answer you. If you send the link of a date, we can open the date as that person sees it to check it.

Sending

This site sends no email. You share the invitation link yourself.

No connection to other services

Link a date is not connected to any other company or service with a similar name.
